John Gutierrez, MD

John Gutierrez, MD, is a Principal at Ascenta Capital. He joined the firm at its inception in 2023 and focuses on discovering and evaluating new investment opportunities.


Prior to joining Ascenta, John was a Senior Associate in the healthcare investment banking group at Goldman Sachs, where he worked as part of the New York-based healthcare group on over $10 billion of announced transactions across biopharma. In this role, John advised private and public biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies on strategic financial transactions, including debt and equity financings as well as M&A. Before Goldman Sachs, John served on various leadership committees at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, where he managed student-led free healthcare clinics and supported the integration of healthcare policy and economics into the medical school curriculum. At Columbia, John was selected to be an International Medical Student Elective candidate at St. Luke’s International Hospital in Tokyo where he engaged in clinical rotations and research projects in cardiovascular medicine disciplines.


John earned his M.D. from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School. He graduated with his B.A. in Economics from the University of Florida where he worked in the College of Medicine’s Center for Translational Research in Neurodegenerative Disease conducting AAV-based gene therapy research on neurodegenerative disease
